Greetings to the Eleventh Edition of our Newsletter!
I just wrapped up my second Japan trip of the year. It’s always a joy returning to see old friends—some of whom I’ve shared a training mat with for years. My approach to training is simple and maybe a bit “Zen”: show up, be present, and see who’s up for training. No reservations needed!
I don’t fuss over booking a specific training partner. When I walk into the dojo, if someone asks to partner up, I'm happy to oblige. Occasionally, this leads to a “memorable” experience—like when a less experienced (but impressively confident!) partner steps in to tell me I’m doing something wrong. I don’t usually wear my Keikogi with the “Daishihan” patch that gives away my rank, so they often assume I'm just another fellow practitioner. I typically let it slide, knowing the next day’s Google search will work its humbling magic.
Not that I particularly mind; I’m here to learn, not to impress. The dojo is a place for discovery, after all, and a true Uke should respond genuinely to whatever happens, regardless of who’s executing the technique.
That’s why I prefer arriving at the dojo without any set expectations. There’s always something new to discover, and I’m here for each lesson.

October 2024
I just wrapped up my 51st training trip to Japan (yes, 51st—you’d think I’d get a free coffee by now). I spent 10 action-packed days in Tokyo, training with a whole lineup of incredible instructors: Nagato Sensei, Noguchi Sensei, Shiraishi Sensei, Someya Sensei, and Sakasai Sensei.
I know, I know—maybe I should pick one teacher and stick with them like a loyal student. But as I see it, Hatsumi Sensei was my true instructor and guiding spirit. Now that he’s retired from teaching, I’m on a quest to absorb all the insights I missed from those senior students who trained directly with him back in the day. We’re all carrying Hatsumi Sensei’s legacy in our own quirky, creative ways, and honestly, I'm just here to soak up every lesson I can!

Bujinkan Toryu Theme
My theme for training this year started with Kukishin-ryū Dakentaijutsu. It’s been a powerful focus, but now, after my recent training trip, I’m considering a few fresh ideas I’d like to explore. So, maybe that will shape the theme for the rest of the year.
As some of you know, I work in shifts, so I can only train on my days off. When I’m working, other Dai Shihan are holding down the fort at Kaigōzan Dōjō. Here are the dates I’ll be training this fall:
- October: 29
- November: 5, 7, 26
- December: 3, 5, 12

YUDANSHA BOOK
I have only written one public book, and it is the YUDANSHA book. I got very good feedback from many prominent Bujinkan teachers including Hatsumi Soke. The book covers all the Taijutsu techniques I think every 5'th Dan should know by heart.
The book is only available from Lulu!
Below is two pages from the book as an example. It is available in a few different formats and bindings.
